Between leaving Zambia and coming to Australia we lived in South Africa for a few years. Along with my mum’s amazing home cooking I remember eating Zulu, British and Afrikaner dishes. I also used to enjoy my trips to the ‘bread shop’ (‘deli’ in Australia) where I would convince my dad to buy me sweets!
With its colourful mix of ingredients and cultures, South African cookery is often romantically known as Rainbow Cuisine. It includes Indigenous African, Dutch, Cape Malay, British and Indian culinary traditions, reflecting the country’s intricate and turbulent history.
